Because the builder ships inside the theme and updates through your own YOOtheme account, an expired licence does not break anything today — it simply stops the updates arriving, and nothing on the dashboard makes that obvious. Sites drift a year behind without a single warning. We track the licence state and the installed version against the current release, and tell you before it becomes the reason something cannot be fixed.
On this product a theme update is a builder update, which makes it more consequential than a theme update anywhere else — it can touch every layout on the site at once. So it is applied on a staging copy first, with the templates that render the most pages checked before anything goes live. That is a different ordering from a typical WordPress site, where the theme is usually the safest thing to update.
Core, PHP and the other plugins are updated on the same staged basis, with the builder last so that any visual change can be traced to a cause. PHP deserves particular attention here: hosts upgrade on their own schedule, and a version jump that a plain theme survives can surface real differences on a site where the theme is doing this much work. We test ahead of the host rather than after.
Because the builder is the theme, a backup that omits or mangles the theme is not a backup of this site in any useful sense. Copies include the theme as installed and enough history to go back past a problem noticed late, and one is restored to a scratch environment periodically so the restore is demonstrated rather than believed.
Copy edits, a new team member, a price change, a seasonal panel. Editing happens in the Customizer here, which is fine once you know it and slow when you do not — so these land with us and your team keeps doing the parts they are comfortable with. Where the same edit keeps recurring, we would usually convert that section to dynamic content once so it stops being an edit at all. Plan hours cover the work.
Availability, certificate expiry, and a periodic test submission through the site's own forms. Forms are the one that matters: they break when a host changes mail handling, nothing announces it, and the cost is measured in the enquiries that never arrived rather than in downtime anybody noticed.

Yes. It is a well-built product and the reluctance you are meeting is unfamiliarity rather than a judgement about your site. We need admin and hosting access and nothing from whoever built it.
The site still works, and it has not received an update in two years, which is the part that matters. Renewing is the first thing we would do, and it is almost always cheaper than living with an unpatchable theme on a site that earns.
More consequential than on a normal site, because the theme is the builder — so it is staged and the busiest templates are checked before it reaches production. Handled that way it is routine. Applied straight to live it is the one update on this stack worth being careful about.
